DON WINSOR

Don Winsor works primarily in scratch-board media, acrylics. and water-based design colors, a more intensely pigmented type of water color. He also occasionally works in oil, and has created murals, signs and graphic designs as well.

His artwork features fine detail, brilliant colors, and stunning yet simple composition. His preferred subjects are fish, birds, wildlife, pets, and Pacific Northwest landscapes.

Don’s original scratch-board engravings start with white clay boards blackened with India ink. Using dental picks, he meticulously scratches out the fine details in glowing white on a black field.

Don was born and raised in Shelton, WA, served in the US Navy in Korea, then earned an art degree from Edison Technical School (now Seattle Central College) in Seattle, WA.

His art career has spanned decades, and he has won prestigious awards; among them the top prize in a US Fish and Wildlife sponsored contest, which led to a contract to paint all Pacific salmon and steel head in life size for their Federal Hatcheries. The originals were hung in the Halls of Congress for a time. He was also chosen as the first Artist in Residence at the John James Audubon National Gallery in Henderson, Kentucky, and was the Art Director for the State of Washington for 15 years.

Don is now semi-retired, and resides in Chehalis, WA.

Don will make a scratch-board etching of your favorite animal or pet from a detailed, high-resolution photograph on commission. If you’re interested, please call him: (360) 996-4628
